Machine Learning Intern

Jan 2026 – Mar 2026

Walkspan ML · New York, NY

Sole engineer on a sidewalk crack-detection service, covering the dataset pipeline, model training and evaluation, a FastAPI inference API and a Streamlit dashboard.

  • Built a data-quality pipeline that found a label-decoding defect affecting nearly 19% of annotations while 78 passing tests missed it. Correcting the decoder raised verified IoU from 34.4% to 42.5% with the model unchanged.
  • Grew the test suite from 66 to 141 automated tests, including dataset-integrity checks, and confirmed each regression test failed against the original defect.
  • Load-tested the Dockerized service and cut worst-case health-check latency from 3.2 s to 1 ms. Also closed a remote-code-execution risk in checkpoint loading.

The IoU change is an evaluation correction, not a model improvement. Research prototype evaluated on 18 held-out images. Latency is worst case under load.
